A funny cancer movie sounds like a horribly wrong, politically incorrect oxymoron, but made for a heartfelt and humorous combination in director Jonathan Levine’s latest film 50/50. With a topic as upsetting as cancer, the odds were not in this 50/50’s favor but the movie does an excellent job balancing the happy with the sad as it follows the lives of best friends Adam(Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Kyle(Seth Rogen) as they deal with Adam’s grim diagnosis.

Unfortunately, Adam’s life-threatening spinal tumor isn’t his only problem. There’s his manipulative, backstabbing girlfriend (Bryce Dallas Howard) and lovingly overbearing mother (Anjelica Huston) to deal with. To make matters worse, Adam opted out of driver’s education because motor vehicle accidents are one of the top 5 leading causes of death in America, right behind cancer.

Luckily, Adam has a reliable support system to fall back on. His boisterous buddy Kyle’s always there to take him out to bars, pick up girls, and smoke medical marijuana with(c’mon it’s Seth Rogen) and Adam’s good-hearted yet inexperienced therapist, Katherine, (Anna Kendrick) tries her hardest to advise him even though she seems nearly as lost as Adam in terms of dealing with his illness.

Together, the trio navigates the ups and downs of Adam’s sickness in this endearing and unlikely comedy. The film has a deeply personal touch and is based on writer Will Reiser’s own battle with cancer and friend Seth Rogen’s experience helping him overcome the disease.

50/50 hit theatres September 30th.
