Little Fockers Movie Poster

Babies, Robert De Niro, and Barbara Streisand equal success at the box office.

The third (and now presumably not final) installment in the popular Meet the Parents franchise opened big this weekend, bringing in $34 million from Friday-Sunday.  Its total, since opening on Wednesday ahead of the holiday rush, crept over the $48 million mark.

Meet the Fockers, which released back in 2004, opened to $46 million over the holiday weekend.  It went on to gross $279 million at the domestic box office before it left theaters.  Little Fockers success could bring about a fourth film for the Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller team, though rumors hold that the stars involved all wanted to pass on the third outing.

Opening in a solid second place, True Grit managed to bring in $25 million from Friday-Sunday.  The movie opened on Wednesday as well, and brought in an additional $11 million before the weekend.  Its five-day haul sits at $36 million, which puts it $2 million behind its $38 million budget.  While only opening in second place over the holiday weekend, the movie is quite obviously a success for the Coens.

The only other holiday film this weekend, Gulliver’s Travels, tanked quite hard.  The movie landed in seventh place with only $7 million for the weekend.  It opened on Saturday, a full four days behind the other big openers, but still failed to find an audience.

Tron: Legacy continued to find an audience, bringing in another $20 million and keeping a solid third place against the two big openers this weekend.  The movie has now earned $88 million in just two weeks of release.  The most impressive fall of the weekend was The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  The movie lost only 12% of its audience from last weekend, bringing in another $10 million toward its $155 million budget.  The movie has now earned $63 million in just three weeks and should have no problems making back its budget before it leaves theaters.
