This documentary executive produced by Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tramaine (Jackass) and directed by Julien Nitzberg takes us on a “wild” ride through the lives of The Whites, known as the last outlaw family residing in Boone County, West Virginia. I think that wild is even too tame of a word to describe the debauchery that goes down throughout this film. Life for the Whites is a non-stop party filled with heavy drinking, hard-core drug use, and tons of fights (a murder case is even looked at in the film), the family truly seems to exist only for the present, with no regard to the future which I have to say looks down right scary for them at times.

Several of Boone County’s government and police officials were interviewed for the documentary and all seem to reach the same conclusion. The Whites refuse to fit into the social norms of society and most of the county have washed their hands of even attempting to deal with the family and the drama surrounding them. My jaw hit the floor several times when watching this film, just out of the pure shock at the way the Whites behave, however it was somehow strangely fascinating at the same time, you know they way you can’t turn away from car wreck, that seems to be the easiest way to describe taking a glimpse into the daily routines of the White family. While a lot of the subject matter covered in the film is downright horrifying for example snorting pills in the hospital after giving birth, admitting to stabbing your husband several times in front of your seven year old child, or passing around joints and beer at the grandmother’s birthday party, there is still something about the White’s that make them somewhat human. Director Julien Nitzberg does an incredible job at telling the story of the Whites without making a mockery of the family, and at times, although it seems impossible you do feel the occasional small twinge of sympathy for some of what is going on with the Whites such as CPS taking away one family members child, a trip to rehab, and the passing of the grandmother Bertie Mae. Keep in mind these sympathy twinges are few and far between because the overall behavior of the White family also leaves you thinking that they deserve everything that is coming to them as well!

The documentary was well put together and certainly thought provoking, as we question just how individuals can live life like the Whites, and I truly think from now on my partying standards will be held in strict comparison to those of the Whites (note the sarcasm), who truly seem to be masters of the real life rock and roll lifestyle even if it is detrimental to them and society as whole! Check out this film, and be sure to let us know what you think!
