It’s rumor mill time.
Showbiz 411 is reporting that Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro are planned to reunite in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Â The video game adaptation is being helmed by David O. Russell (The Fighter, Three Kings), who is writing a completely new screenplay from scratch.
As everyone who actually enjoys imagining video game adaptions not completely sucking, whenever a new script is being written, and it reportedly has “very little” in common with the game — it’s disaster time. Â So, while the Pesci/De Niro reunion seems nice, the worst part is still to come.
Do you know what kills a video game adaptation faster than a new script? Â A horrifically miscast lead.
So, with that — Mark Wahlberg is reportedly the wanted actor for the role of Nathan Drake. Â Damn.
Wahlberg is such a good actor, but he is completely, 100% wrong for the role of Nathan Drake. Â Anyone who has played either of the first two Uncharted games will agree. Â Drake is a wise cracking, sarcastic, cocky, and generally updated Indian Jones persona. Â There are so many obvious choices better than Wahlberg.
First, there’s the guy who actually voiced Drake in the games Nolan North. Â North looks a lot like the character, and has done other work in Hollywood. Â If you wanted an actor with lead role experience, look no further than Nathan Fillion.
Fillion has actually be self-campaigning for the role on twitter for the last few months. Â The guy is perfect for the role.
Whedon-ites out there, remember Serenity? Â Well, Nathan Drake is 95% the same character, just minus the whole sci-fi cowboy vibe, and add a jewel hunter persona. Â It’s staring you in the face David O. Russell!
We’ll update with the impending miscasting fiasco becomes official.
