At Celebration V, George Lucas announced that all six of the Star Wars movies will be coming to Blu-ray.

Okay, so there are some people out there who already have 1080p versions of the entire saga, but that’s besides the point.  This is the first official HD Star Wars version to be offered, and it’s not just the quality everyone is waiting for.

Lucas screened a deleted scene from Return of the Jedi at Celebration V, hinting that other deleted scenes and bonus material might be included on the Blu-Ray versions of the Episodes I-VI.

For those who didn’t sit through the hours and hours of behind the scenes footage and featurettes on the DVDs (which I did), here’s the recap: Star Wars does extras like no one else–all out.

Extras, extras, extras… but deleted scenes?  The official press release says that documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives, and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives will be included on the Blu-Rays.

As for the release date, Lucas was less specific.  ”I wish I could say it was coming out this year, but it will come out next year.”

The official release also states the Star Wars Blu-Rays will be available Fall 2011… so we can expect lines to begin forming soon.
